Illuminating columns

Illuminating columnsSlim tubular lighting columns for external use have been introduced by thorn. The Alumet range of luminaires provide a comprehensive, flexible system says the firm. Alumet comes with either an opal or clear diffuser. The former takes twin 54 W T5 lamps, while the clear diffusers offer a three-way choice of optics: with Fresnel rings or a glass top lens, or with multi-layered directional spotlights. The spotlights take white or coloured LEDs with narrow or wide beams, or 35 W HIR-CE 111 lamps. They can be supplied with various louvres, refractors and filters. An external lampshield adds further flexibility.

Accented lighting

Accented lightingTo help electrical contractors meet demands for LED display and accent lighting, Thorn has launched D-CO LED. There are six sets of fittings, spearheaded by fixed and multi-directional recessed downlights. With a choice of three or six Osram 1.2 W LEDs, combined with 15 degree, 24degree or 35degree beam spreads, the downlights are ideal replacements for 20-35 W MR16 halogen fittings says the firm. D-CO LED's can also be used as a spotlight thanks to its small size and high brightness. The LED head projects from a 60 mm surface plate.

A flood of light from Thorn

A flood of light from ThornA new complete matching series of discharge and compact fluorescent luminaries from 42 W to 600 W has been launched by Thorn Lighting. The Thorn Areaflood range features an inclined front glass and integrated visor for precise light control, says the firm. Areaflood comes in two sizes with asymmetric or 'street' reflectors, peak beam angles are up to 60 degrees, with a total cut off at 90 degrees. The lights are sealed to IP66 and can be supplied with integral photocell, adaptive controls, hot-restrike gear and emergency lighting.

Dimmer controls, simply

Dimmer controls, simplyElectrical industry folklore has it that lighting controls are complicated and suitable only for large projects. So says Thorn Lighting, which is claiming its new SensaModular 'plug-and-play' dimming solution could be the answer for single room applications. The system is capable of responding to sensors and other interfaces without the need for extra commissioning tools, says the firm. Central to the system is the SensaModular controller which processes the signals from sensors, photocells, scene plates, switches and hand-held IR devices. It operates up to three groups of luminaires, thus creating ideal conditions for daylight-linking, presence-linking and scene-setting. The device can automatically detect and operate DSI or DALI ballasts, or any combination thereof. Commissioning is made easy and safe thanks to the system's design, according to Thorn. The firm believes it will open up "completely new markets for dimming."

Pointing the way out

Pointing the way outThe Voyager Sigma emergency lighting sign is the first product to be designed and manufactured at Thorn's new plant in Spennymoor, near Durham. Designed for wall mounting, each single-sided sign complies with BS 5266, and is visible at up to 30 metres. Fittings take LEDs or fluorescent sources. All fittings are similar in design, having a polycarbonate body finished in white or silver, with a panel in a choice of either EU or ISO legend. However, the LED versions have superior NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) batteries. Voyager Sigma is claimed by the manufacturer Thorn Lighting to provide 'excellent uniformity' and to provide three hour maintained operation. This includes options for manual, self and addressable test. A hinged gear tray makes installation and maintenance of the emergency lighting sign easy, according to the manufacturer. One of the guiding principles of the new factory in Spennymoor is said to be sustainability, and the new range of lighting 'does not disappoint' on that score, says Thorn. The range uses 20 per cent fewer components and and 73 per cent less steel than its predecessor. The recycling potential of the units is believed to be 97 per cent, compared with 78 per cent in the previous comparable units from the manufacturer.
