HOTELS, LEISURE & HEALTHCARE

tables and bar stools have become particularly
popular in hotel bars, lounges and dining areas,
especially where space is often at a premium.
Seating designs are also being heavily influenced
by technology. The reception and other public spaces
are now places where guests and visitors need to use
their smart phones, tablets, and laptops, and where
meetings can be conducted in a relaxed environment.
Hence, upholstered seating that boasts integral
charging points for mobiles and laptops is a must.
Modular soft seating is commonly found in hotel
lobbies as it offers unrivalled levels of flexibility
and can accommodate larger numbers of people.
It is also widely specified in high-use environments
and relaxed open-plan areas such as shopping
malls, leisure, and healthcare environments. It’s
the versatility of modular furniture that makes
it a winning choice, as it provides specifiers with
significant freedom in creating seating areas that can
accommodate infinite layout arrangements. It can
also meet the demands of large, small, awkward, and
even narrow spaces. By choosing modular options,
the specifier can create a design that perfectly fits the
personality of the space.
From straight and curved configuration seating,
to more traditional options of sofas, corner units
and footstools, the modular possibilities are endless.
One or two large modular seating groups can make a
unified statement in an otherwise busy setting like a
shopping mall. Simple modular seating designs can
also complement classic, statement-making lounge
chairs and simple side-tables to create inviting
options for rest and conversation.
Cleaning, maintenance and lasting durability are
key considerations for high-use environments where
rips, tears, and damage tend to be unavoidable.
However, rather than replacing an entire piece of
furniture, it’s easier and more cost-effective to replace
one piece within a modular arrangement.
Specifying the right seating and furniture can
create a design statement in its own right. The need
to stand out from the crowd continues to drive
interior design schemes and nowhere is this need
greater than in a hotel lobby or reception area of any
Lyndon’s luxurious bespoke two-seater sofas and armchairs
adorn the Everyman cinema at The Mailbox in Birmingham.
They come complete with footrests and individual walnut tables
establishment where first impressions and branding
count. Offering exclusivity, individuality, flexibility,
and craftsmanship all rolled into one, bespoke
handcrafted upholstery, especially pieces made using
quality timber and featuring timber detailing, can
provide fresh inspiration for designers.
Of course in some environments, luxury and
comfort is paramount. These spaces need to
evoke feelings of contentment, relaxation and
even escapism, so that individuals will want to
spend more time there. We don’t always associate
cinemas with luxury and decadence but when
the UK network of Everyman saw the need for
upholstery that combined extravagance with comfort
and practicality, they chose Lyndon’s bespoke
handcrafted furniture. Bespoke two-seater sofas and
armchairs were specified throughout their cinema
venues. Made from a variety of coloured fabrics
including velvet with fully upholstered timber
frame, the seating comes complete with foam and
feather deluxe seat cushions. Handcrafted footrests
and tables also help make the Everyman cinema
experience truly unique and a standout venue.
Regardless of the environment, colour is another
major consideration and a fundamental element
of the overall design. From vibrant accent walls to
soft furnishings, floor coverings and accessories,
designers have unparallelled freedom to create bright
and energetic commercial interiors. Whilst we’re
already familiar with the power of colourful and
patterned upholstery in creating striking interiors, it’s
now possible to specify timber or wooden framed
furniture in a wealth of vibrant colours too.
The colour can be applied to the underframes,
tables, legs, and even the arms of timber frame
seating and the end result is the same – bold, vibrant
and spectacular. For some environments, coloured
furniture is the perfect choice. Take a public library
for example. While adult reading areas are intended
to be calming and relaxing, younger children thrive
in brightly coloured environments. Hence, the
children’s section of the library is perfect for boldly
coloured seating and tables.
From the lobby to the patient room, the
administrative offices, the cafeteria and everywhere
in between, there are varying demands for seating
and furniture within the healthcare sector. However,
most healthcare settings involve some form of
waiting – from the initial check-in and diagnosis,
to the actual treatment rooms – and usually these
environments can be tedious, and even stressful
for many patients and their families. To help
promote calmness and wellbeing, these spaces must
be family-friendly for patients and visitors alike.
Comfortable and ergonomic lounge chairs, with or
without arms, relaxing sofas, and modular seating
that is completely flexible and reconfigurable, are all
popular options for this sector.
Now, more than ever before, seating and furniture
needs to be multi-functional, able to meet the demands
of the surrounding environment, and provide comfort
for its users. Ultimately, that choice will depend on the
amount of space available, the required role, and the
budget, of course. Get it right, and seating and furniture
will become the new design heroes.
