HEATING, VENTILATION AND AIR CONDITIONING DECEMBER 2017 | BUILDING PRODUCTS 33 once used, is quickly restored. A system boiler is an economical option for a larger family home, with multiple bathrooms, as it can meet high demands for hot water and heating. This product design may also be seen in older homes that have a need for this specific format to fit with the original layout of the property. However, for some properties, it is not a clear choice between the two options. For homes where demand cannot be met by a combi boiler alone but is not high enough to efficiently use a system boiler, a passive flue gas heat recovery device (PFGHRD) can be a wise investment. A PFGHRD simply sits on top of the boiler and takes what would otherwise be wasted heat from expelled flue gases and use it to pre-heat cold mains water. In doing so, the workload placed on the boiler is reduced, but the flow rate is also increased for a longer period of time than when using a combination boiler alone. With this in place, the boiler will easily service multiple outlets. A regular boiler is a heat-only boiler that must be connected to a cylinder to be able to supply hot water to a property. This boiler needs to have a cold-water storage tank and an expansion tank in the loft in order to work successfully for the homeowner. Regular heatonly boilers are often seen in older homes and are not often used in new buildings. The right controls are also essential in a home. Despite this, a study carried out by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) between 2010 and 2015, illustrated that 800,000 homes were without boiler controls. In fact, it has been estimated that upgrading all homes so they have the three basic heating control elements – a timer, a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves – could save 30% of the energy used for heating and hot water. There is a wide range of controls available in the current market. For example, controls with a GPS setting have been released. Whilst being connected to a smart phone, the GPS will be able to detect when you are a few miles from your property, and sense when you have returned to your home. This could successfully suit homeowners who perhaps work differing shift patterns and wish to preserve energy. There are also specific learning controls with the capability to sense the building temperature and adjust the heating level in the home accordingly. In addition to this, weather compensator probes are a form of modern gadgetry, ideal for any home. With the ability to combine the exterior and interior temperatures and activate appropriately, they can save the homeowner time and successfully cut high costs in the long run. Heating and hot water is what allows a home to act as the comforting haven that every homeowner wishes for. Although finding the right products can initially appear to be a challenge, it is highly imperative that the right system is chosen for an individual property and a homeowner’s personal lifestyle. Thankfully, there is a clear and wide range of options to suit every size house. www.alpha-innovation.co.uk It is imperative that the right system is chosen for an individual property
