BUILDING PRODUCTS As we come to the end of another turbulent year, social boundaries have been called into question, sparking debate and creating a catalyst for change. With so much conflict and instability around us, it’s enough to induce anxiety in even the most calm-and-collected of individuals, but fortunately, the construction industry is made of sterner stuff and this week, we received some positive news. The latest data from information analyst, IHS Markit and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) points to a rebound, albeit moderate, in UK construction output, with business activity rising at the strongest rate since June, as well as a welcome increase in new orders and employment numbers (see page 8). And with business optimism also on the rise, up from October’s five year low, it is heartening to hear CIPS’ Duncan Brock suggest that: “Perhaps the darkest days are behind the sector, with fresh impetus on the horizon for the New Year.” Taking a similarly upbeat view, is the Federation of Master Builders’ Sarah McMonagle, who, describing the Chancellor’s recent budget as a ‘budget for builders’, hopes the measures taken by the government will help SME builders to deliver “more of the new homes Britain so badly needs” (see page 74). And while it is quite likely that, with Brexit around the corner, the next few years could well bring unprecedented challenges to the sector, as Albert Einstein once said: “In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity.” I look forward to meeting more of you in the coming months, but in the meantime, I would like to wish all our readers and contributors a very merry Christmas and best wishes for the New Year. If you have any comments or suggestions with regard to future issues of Building Products, I would love to hear from you.
