CEILINGS, PARTITIONS AND BOARDS DECEMBER 2017 | BUILDING PRODUCTS 61 Wall absorbers can work in conjunction with acoustic ceilings or independently to improve room acoustics. The sports hall at a flagship UK leisure centre called for a bespoke solution to control reverberation and meet the high specification demanded for the project. The wall absorbers chosen for the interior have high sound absorption which is ideal for sports halls and schools to ensure compliance with the acoustic standards of Building Bulletin 93. The wall absorbers here have a durable woven surface that offers the highest Class 1A impact resistance to cope with tough daily use and protect against the damage that can be during ball sports. Specified in Sport England blue, the absorbers help the architect create a hall that is visually stimulating and inspires people to want to exercise. Vertical ceiling baffles are affixed to thick concrete soffits in the classrooms and library of a new school building in Hampshire. The baffles provide the correct levels of acoustic absorption and attenuation in this key learning environment and reduce noise levels throughout the open-plan breakout areas. They also help with heating and cooling needs within the building by allowing air to flow freely between the soffit and the rest of the room. Kitchens and washrooms must adhere to strict hygiene standards. A suspended ceiling with a durable surface that can resist growth of microorganisms and offers moisture control to prevent the growth of fungi and bacteria is perfect for these environments. Ceilings that offer moisture resistance of up to 100% RH retain dimensional stability even in areas with permanently high humidity and temperatures of up to 40°c. The circulation areas in an exclusive residential development are fitted with acoustic metal ceilings, which are classified A1 fire performance. Installing acoustic ceilings in corridors and communal areas creates a barrier between areas with differing uses where sound is contained and controlled. Enhanced fire safety is paramount in these thoroughfares, to allow time for safe evacuation should a fire occur. Ceilings with high fire safety ratings can remain stable in the event of a fire and do not contribute to flame spread. When designing multi-purpose structures with complex acoustic needs, look for a manufacturer that offers a range of ceiling solutions which meet or exceed required performance specifications and work in harmony with the interior to enhance acoustics and ensure the wide-ranging demands of these developments are successfully met. www.knaufamf.com Ceiling baffles, fins and rafts offer versatility
