This year not only marks the 20th anniversary of Kemper System in the UK and 60 years globally, but managing director, Harry Cowell, has received the ‘Special Contribution to the Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Industry’ accolade at the inaugural LRWA Awards and gala event (November 2017). Kemper System was also named a finalist in two categories at the LRWA Awards. The first in the ‘Liquid Roofing Project of the Year under 1000m²’ category with contractors, Capital Roofing, for its work on the Calvary Charismatic Baptist Church project in London. A second project by Kemper System and Castle Contractors was shortlisted in the ‘Liquid Roofing Project of the Year over 1000m²’ for the refurbishment of the Blackpool Municipal Building in Lancashire. Stuart Hicks at Kemper System said: “Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the team, we have been recognised in two major roofing industry awards, which is fantastic. “We look forward to an exciting year ahead as our new MD, Peter Dietrich, comes on board in 2018.” www.kempersystem.co.uk Arts and crafts inspired house gets traditional makeover When architects Lawrence Grigg and Lydia Robinson from Design Storey, an Architecture and Development Company, were looking to adapt a traditional 1950s Cotswolds building to create a contemporary addition, Wienerberger’s Heritage Service was specified. This arts and crafts inspired house is now a renovated property with a contemporary tile clad pavilion extension, and has recently featured on Channel 4’s new programme, ‘Best Laid Plans’. To meet the challenges posed by the project, Wienerberger’s heritage service was selected to design and create bespoke handmade roof tiles for the project, which evoked the arts and crafts heritage of the area. Nigel Dyer, heritage service manager at Wienerberger, and Ian Martinson, a master craftsman at the company, worked closely with the architects, creating a mock roof section in the factory, both to show the concept and to enable the craftsmen to design the bespoke fittings for the new contemporary addition to match the special requirements of the project’s aesthetic. Nigel commented: “We are delighted with the Grevel Lane building. Through creating bespoke roof tiles, we were able to provide the perfect solution for Lawrence and Lydia.” www.wienerberger.co.uk Specialist contractor, Prater, has been appointed by Lendlease to deliver separate full external envelope packages for a new Picturehouse Cinema and Travelodge at Elwick Place in Ashford, Kent. Designed by Guy Holloway Architects, Elwick Place will comprise a 100,000ft² leisure and restaurant development in the heart of Ashford town centre. Prater is contributing to the extensive work at Elwick Place with the construction of the new Picturehouse cinema expected to begin in December 2017. The facade package will feature curved steelwork and bespoke anodised feature mesh panels, adding an extra level of complexity for the design and installation of the structure. Prater will install Schuco curtain walling to the main entrance and atrium of the cinema and steel access doors to the back of the building. The roofing package will include an inverted PermaQuik hot melt waterproofing system, insulation and paving, as well as paved finishes to the low level roofing and terraces. The main cinema roof will feature an Esha flex acoustic warm roof on a metal deck and glazed rooflights will be utilised on both areas. www.prater.co.uk
