The building envelope was successfully completed in just over two weeks, with the help of the Kingspan TEK Building System of structural insulated panels (SIPs). Surrey Square Primary School commenced a 10-year improvement plan in 2006, the final part of which included the erection of its single-storey Early Years Centre (EYC) and crèche. This new build is situated in the existing playground and will accommodate up to 34 pre-school children and eight under three-year olds. Earle Architects specified 420m2 of the Kingspan TEK Building System in a 142mm thickness for the walls and roof of the new centre. With their highperformance insulation core, and their ability to achieve U-values of 0.20 W/m2.K or better, SIPs are said to have helped the school to meet the criteria for materials to be sustainably sourced and thermally efficient. Kingspan TEK Building System panels also feature a jointing system which, in combination with its OSB/3 facing, can help to create highly airtight buildings. As standard, the OSB/3 facing of all Kingspan TEK panels is PEFC certified. www.kingspantek.co.uk Damp proofing products a Derby winner A suite of products from the Dryzone range, developed by Safeguard Europe has eradicated damp from a late 1950s house in the Allestree district of Derby. Dryzone Cream is a BBA-approved and patented silane/siloxane material that forms a DPC in brick, coursed stone, rubble infill and cavity walls. Safeguard says that unlike other chemical DPCs, it is not injected under pressure, so not only is it up to three times faster to install than alternative chemical injection systems, but it also presents less risk of waste or spillage. “We recommended lowering the external ground levels so that the DPC level was more than 150mm above ground level, but this wasn’t wholly practicable, so we applied Dryzone cream, which forms a chemical DPC,” said Paul Walker, of CK Walker Damp & Timbers. Vandex BB75 tanking slurry was also used on the job. Once cured, Vandex BB75 tanking slurry forms a waterproof coating that can be employed against both passive and active water pressures up to 7 bar. It will bridge up to 0.4mm in concrete and can be used to fill cracks and protect areas of potential cracking. www.safeguardeurope.com Stone wool insulation installed on Manchester high-rise Offering advanced building insulation as well as industrial and technical options, Rainscreen Duo Slab from Rockwool has been installed on a new high-rise building in Manchester to provide a fire safety option that also delivers reliable thermal performance and superior acoustics. In March 2016, construction began on a new high-rise development, named One Regent, on Water Street in Manchester. Made up of 307 apartments, including six townhouses and 326m2 of commercial space, the project sits at the gateway to Manchester’s city centre. This project required insulation that would provide optimal fire safety, a thermal performance Uvalue of 0.18 W/m²K, and acoustic protection. Due to this, developer and main contractor, Renaker Build chose 21,000m2 of Rockwool Rainscreen Duo Slab in 125mm for the project. John Messer, project manager at Renaker Build, said: “As well as its leading thermal efficiency and fire resistance, one of the main qualities that stands out when using Rockwool Rainscreen Duo Slab is the fewer fixings that are required to install the product. This helped us keep costs down during installation, in terms of product and manual labour.” www.rockwool.co.uk Manufacturer of high performance building chemicals, Bond It, has launched EasiSeal Pro - a one-part, cold applied liquid waterproofing system which is said to offer ‘impressive ease of use and versatility.’ The latest addition to the company's PRO range of sealants and adhesives, which utilise advanced, hybrid polymer technology, EasiSeal PRO is described as an exciting alternative to traditional waterproofing products like bitumen. Said to virtually odourless, nonflammable and extremely low in VOCs, EasiSeal PRO requires no heating prior to application and can be simply painted onto a substrate using a brush or roller to form a permanently flexible, waterproof barrier. It offers excellent adhesion to concrete, brick, stone, lead, metals, glass, wood, bitumen (when treated with EasiSeal Pro Primer first), asphalt, PVC-U, GRP roof panels and most plastics. It is also non-shrinking, noncracking and overpaintable with most paints, as well as highly UV resistant and stable under temperatures ranging from -50º. to 120º. EasiSeal Pro can even be applied in the wet. Bond It is supplying EasiSeal Pro in 5.5kg tubs and in a choice of three colours - grey, brown and black. www.bond-it.co.uk Sealing the deal
