GENERAL PRODUCTS | PRODUCT PROFILES Residents get their money’s worth at Dollar Bay Youth centre delivers awardwinning JANUARY 2018 | BUILDING PRODUCTS 55 A £90 million development in London’s Canary Wharf specified more than 2,600m2 of aluminium soffits from Guttercrest to construct winter gardens for its newbuild apartments. Dollar Bay is an award-winning design featuring 125 waterfront homes with uninterrupted views across Canary Wharf, The Thames and Greenwich. Guttercrest’s aluminium balcony soffits were specified for the underside of Dollar Bay’s winter garden roof and balconies, reportedly due to their lightweight, durability and weather resistant properties. Guttercrest designed the secret fix soffits for this project to enable access to the motors, electrics and sensors that were fitted in the winter gardens if required. The arrowhead profile planks are demountable from either end on every individual property, adding a level of practicality without losing any of the sleek visual impact the aluminium soffits create. Arrowhead soffits were mounted to Guttercrest’s adjustable galvanised steel sub-frame and polyester powder coated to RAL 9010M, pure matte white. All panels were supplied in 2m lengths to allow access by lift with restricted head room. The project has racked up 10 award wins or short listings, including winning London Evening Standards’ New Homes Award. www.guttercrest.co.uk Invisible conduit system protects from hazards A non-coated, all stainless steel, flexible conduit system that is said to offer high levels of cable protection from numerous hazards, while appearing invisible to the naked eye, has been launched by Flexicon. FSS Black is a stainless steel annularly corrugated conduit available in 20mm and 25mm diameters and has a fixed fitting with metric threads. The nickel plated brass fittings are also available in black to maintain an invisible system when mounted against dark or black environments. Tim Creedon, sales and marketing director for Flexicon, said: “The new FSS Black range is coloured through a nonadditive process. “The result is an all metallic system that offers the highest levels of performance from a wide range of hazards while minimising any danger in the event of a fire – it will not burn, create smoke, is halogen free and is inherently flame retardant.” The new range has an IP rating of IP68, is highly corrosion resistant, has a black finish, a high compression and impact strength of 1000kg/100mm and a high tensile or pull off strength of 100kg. www.flexicon.uk.com A new community hub combining award winning design with increased functionality has been built, with help from the specification of Thrutone fibre cement slate from Marley Eternit. The Point, which picked up both a RIBA South Award 2017 and saw the project’s architects Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt crowned RIBA South Emerging Practice of the Year 2017, offers a two storey youth centre in Tadley. In response to the bespoke brief, Thrutone fibre cement slate from Marley Eternit was specified in a ‘smooth’ dark grey to deliver a ‘strong visual appeal’, while its lightweight properties meant it was suitable for use on both the roof and facade. Thrutone fibre cement slate offers a minimum pitch down to 15°, while also achieving BES 6001 ‘Very Good’ rating to gain credits under BREEAM and CFSH, and is a 100% recyclable building material. Daniel Redfern, marketing executive at Marley Eternit, said: “A key benefit of the fibre cement range is its ability to be used on both roof and facade and blend the two seamlessly; as demonstrated on this striking build, providing something truly valuable to the local community.” www.marleyeternit.co.uk/slates design To Infinity and beyond The Infinity range of A-rated continuous flow gas fired water heaters from Rinnai, which includes models specifically designed for domestic/light commercial use, is said to guarantee the highest efficiencies and lowest running costs at consistent temperatures 24/7, compared with any method of hot water delivery. Rinnai say its Infinity range of continuous flow – sometimes referred to as ‘tankless’ – water heating units are being specified more and more often for domestic properties, cafes, pubs, restaurants, offices, shops, hairdressers, commercial units, caravan parks and leisure facilities. The Rinnai Infinity 16i interior model measures 675mm x 370mm x 139mm and weighs in at 18kg. The room sealed unit has a temperature range of 35°C to 60°C with direct electronic ignition. Gas consumption ranges between 4.7kW-34.9kW for Natural Gas and 4.9kW-36.8kW when using propane. Hot water delivery flow is a 16ltr max flow and 2.4 ltr/min minimum flow. Nominal operation pressure is 1-7 bar and it uses a 230V AC 50Hz 1ph power supply with an electrical consumption of 68W. www.rinnaiuk.com
