BUILDING PRODUCTS When I left college way back in 1974, I was lucky enough featuring stories about an horrific fire at the Summerland leisure complex on the Isle of Man, which had happened in the previous year ... and I do remember many people saying that ‘this must never be allowed to happen again’. Scroll forward to 2017, and here we are dumbfounded at the tragic events that hit the Grenfell Tower residential development in West London. Like most of you, I’m sure, I watched in horror as the fire took hold, and raced up the outside of the structure. All I could do was sit there and say: ‘this can’t be right ... this should not be happening!’ I had truly believed that there was enough legislation, advanced technology, and expertise in place to prevent this tragedy. Evidently, I was wrong. Feelings are understandably ‘running high’, with plenty of blame being apportioned to various parties. We must try and approach this calmly and resist ‘knee-jerk’ reactions, even though I am equally aware that the friends and relatives of those lost at Grenfell are rightly angry, and too many others around the country are living in fear of their lives because they reside in accommodation where the cladding used resembles that of Grenfell Tower, and at this early stage it is the cladding taking a share of the blame. As a response to the fire, Arconic is discontinuing global sales of Reynobond PE for use in high-rise applications. The company believes this is the right decision because of the inconsistency of building codes across the world Editor Phil Stronach 01626 330440 to land a job as ‘Trainee Journalist’ on the much lamented Building Trades Journal. Arconic has also stated that it will continue to fully support the authorities as it investigates this tragedy. It should be clearly stated that Arconic does not make the entire cladding system, but produces aluminium composite material that is just one of the components. I trust the imminent enquiry to come up with the right answers, and the necessary recommendations to ensure there is no repeat of this disaster. My hope above all others is that the enquiry does not find that pounds and pence outweighed people and possessions in the selection. People matter, and each and every one of us has the right to be protected as much as possible in the buildings within which we work, enjoy our leisure, and reside. My thoughts are for the victims and the families affected by the Grenfell Tower disaster. Whatever happens in the future, one thing is for sure: This must NEVER be allowed to happen again!
