PRODUCT PROFILES | GENERAL PRODUCTS Wall liner improves dwelling’s thermal ability 60 BUILDING PRODUCTS | JULY 2017 Scottish theatre-goers get a warm press reception The new Rockvilla centre in Glasgow, Scotland has had Viega supply its Megapress press connection system to help heat the £6.5 million headquarters. The Rockvilla centre will be the headquarters of the National Theatre Scotland (NTS), and required the installation of a new heating system within the 3,700m2 space. Installed by Moffat Mechanical in just five months, the system saves up to 60% of assembly time compared to traditional tube connection methods such as welding or threading – both of which can affect the integrity of the tube wall. The Megapress system also provides a clean connection due to its pressing function, meaning there is no excess cutting oil, metal swarf, hemp residue or jointing compound. The installation at the Rockvilla centre required 500 connections of the thickwalled steel fittings ranging from 15mm to 54mm. William Giplin, mechanical project engineer at Moffat Mechanical said: “Having worked with the system before, we knew just how easy the Megapress would be to use. Using a single press gun, the connections can be achieved in the most confined spaces – completing a full seal in a single press.” www.viega.co.uk A thin internal wall liner, from A. Proctor Group, which will significantly improve the thermal performance of solid wall dwellings, has been added to the company’s range. The Spacetherm WL (Wall Liner) is a high-performance laminate created to fix to internal surfaces of existing solid walls without the need for mechanical fixings. Spacetherm WL consists of 10mm Spacetherm aerogel insulation blanket bonded to 3mm Magnesium Oxide Board (MgO), for use in applications where improved thermal performance is required with limited space. Spacetherm WL can achieve similar performance to traditional plasterboard laminates, but at a fraction of the thickness, allowing greater flexibility for refurbishment projects. At just 13mm thick, in many cases, there is no need to 3mm Magnesium (MgO) remove skirting boards and cornices, saving time and cost. The application of Spacetherm WL can reduce the U value to around 0.8 W/m2K, dependent on the wall structure. Specific calculations can be provided upon request. The Spacetherm WL system can be used with a variety of decorative finishes such as paint, wallpaper and tiles, and is easily installed in line with the manufacturer’s guidelines. www.proctorgroup.com Bus routed to the spot for library As part of a playground development scheme, Robert Kett Primary School in Norfolk had an innovative idea to turn an unused double-decker bus into an outside library for the pupils using Norbord's CaberWood MDF and Jewson Cringleford, who were able to supply 16 sheets of the strong, high quality material to enable the project to become a reality. Some months on and the library has proven very popular with the pupils at Robert Kett. School business manager Karen Hurst, said: "The bus has given the quieter children somewhere to escape the busy playground during break times; they can listen to stories or select a book to read. The Haven Holiday Park is situated within the former grounds of Haggerston Castle and is dedicated to preserving the natural environment; therefore the fabric performance of the Kingspan TEK Building System helped to reduce the facilities’ energy requirements. The highly insulated core of the 142mm Kingspan TEK Building System panels can allow them to achieve U-values of 0.20 W/m2.K and below, whilst the OSB/3 facing and unique jointing system help to minimise unnecessary air loss. Both the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel and Kingspan TEK Building System panels are also available in a 172mm thickness, delivering Uvalues of 0.17 W/m2.K or better, without the need for additional insulation.
