GENERAL PRODUCTS | PRODUCT PROFILES Whole building retrofit system reduces energy bills by 85% A large-scale whole building retrofit system installed on a social housing development in Solihull, has used Kingspan Kooltherm K5 external wall board, reducing its energy requirements. Grandy’s Croft, a low-rise block of six flats, was upgraded to meet the demanding EnerPHit Standard using an off-site, wrap-around large scale (OWLS) retrofit solution: the Beattie Passive TCosy. Funded by Innovate UK through their ‘Scaling-up Retrofit Competition’, the pilot project was a collaboration between Solihull Community Housing, system designers and installers, Beattie Passive, and Passivhaus consultants and project managers, Encraft. Additional technical and tenant management support was also provided by Coventry University. The all-in-one retrofit solution was installed around the existing building to create a highly insulated envelope, limiting thermal bridges. Ron Beattie, managing director of Beattie Passive said: “Using the Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board within our retrofit system has helped us to achieve Uvalues of just 0.099 W/m2.K for the walls and an airtightness test result of 0.93 air changes per hour. These calculations mean that the Retrofit system easily meets Enerphit Standards.” www.kingspaninsulation.co.uk Hot water heating unit combines efficiency with simplicity JULY 2017 | BUILDING PRODUCTS 61 Vinyl flooring is fit for purpose Commercial sheet vinyl flooring from Polyflor’s Expona Flow PUR collection was recently installed in a new gym area at Shrewsbury Sports Village in Shropshire. Peterborough based Escape Fitness designed the sports centre’s new gym and also installed the 220m² of Expona Flow PUR flooring throughout the space for Shropshire Community Leisure Trust. This heterogeneous vinyl flooring was used for the areas surrounding cardio and resistance equipment, the free weight area and walkways. Two designs from the Expona Flow range were selected to be installed alongside each other - English Oak from the Wood collection and Meadow from the Cosmos collection. Available in a two metre wide format with a 2mm gauge, the Expona Flow PUR flooring collection includes 50 wood, stone and abstract designs. Expona Flow PUR is enhanced with Polyflor’s polyurethane reinforcement which is cross linked and UV cured for a simple polish-free maintenance regime and superior cleaning benefits. Paul Lipscombe, international flooring project manager at Escape Fitness said: “We love how these two Expona Flow designs work together to create clearly defined pathways around the gym area and a vibrant atmosphere which we hope will help motivate visitors.” www.polyflor.com An alternative solution that marries high efficiency and wide ranges of modulation with simplicity of installation and design is the gas fired continuous flow hot water heating unit from Rinnai. These units can be manifolded into a hot water system capable of coping with virtually any size of site or application. This system is a process of delivering a continuous flow of hot water at a constant temperature, without the need for storage. Continuous flow will only ever utilise energy whenever heat is needed, such as the turning on of a tap in a washroom or a kitchen. When the units are in operation and heating water - gas is used - when the user is finished, so is the energy usage. Condensing continuous flow hot water solutions qualify for additional energy efficiency points, boosting building energy performance as they far exceed energy efficiencies called for in Part L Building Regulations (Conservation of fuel and power). The systems are also ‘A’ rated under ErP. In addition, smart controls can be added to commercial condensing continuous flow systems to boost and govern the performance of the hot water system. www.rinnaiuk.com Glazed interior portioning aims to keep occupants safe Architects and designers planning a fire escape route within their buildings can now specify Crittall Fabrications glazed partitions and doorsets.
