GENERAL PRODUCTS Single ply roofing helps cricket club see red JULY 2017 | BUILDING PRODUCTS 71 Contemporary lighting designer and manufacturer David Trubridge has made use of Medite Tricoya Extreme for an innovative outdoor lighting installation in Rotorua on New Zealand’s North Island. The Nightlights project consists of 30 off 2.5m tall lantern-style lights which have been installed above Rotorua’s Redwood Treewalk, a suspended walkway which weaves through the impressive trees of Rotorua’s Redwood Forest. For the lighting, a material was needed that would be durable enough to withstand changing outdoor weather conditions and resist any fungal decay. Medite Tricoya Extreme was suited to this application given its durability, excellent machineability properties and its 50 year guarantee when used in external environments. The materials qualities are its durability, stability and ability to be used in environments no usually considered possible for wood-based panel products. In this project it is being used to enhance the natural environment, and other benefits to this application include the knowledge that the raw material is both sustainably sourced and FSC certified, and that the modification process is non-toxic and environmentally compatible. www.meditetricoya.com Leicester’s ‘Best New Building’ shades from the limelight The award winning, £42 million Vijay Patel Building at De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester, combines several structural elements, each distinguished by contrasting, yet highly effective external solar shading and screening solution, courtesy of Levolux. The development, named after Dr Vijay Patel, a graduate of DMU’s Leicester School of Pharmacy and now a very successful businessman, comprises the Arts Tower, Design Wing, the Food Village and the Pod. In total, Levolux provided 156 Glass PV Fins for the Arts Tower, each measuring up to 763mm wide and up to 3.3m in length. The Fins have been divided into two sections. Some 81 Fins have been fixed horizontally in a vertical stack on the tower’s southfacing elevation. The remainder are fixed vertically, secured with angled brackets to the south-west facing elevation. All aluminium components supplied by Levolux for this project were finished in an attractive and highly durable powder coating. This is available in a wide range of colours and with a range of specialist surface treatments, including a faux terracotta finish. www.levolux.com A £12million, 150-bedroomed, five storey four star hotel at the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club is being made weathertight with some 1000m2 of mechanically-fixed Protan SE1.6mm single ply membrane, in red, to reflect the corporate colours of the Club. Protan SE single ply membrane, available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm, is certified to deliver, and potentially surpass, the energy efficiency requirements laid down in Approved Document L, and, under the Green Guide, achieve a A+ rating. Hot-air welded at joints and mechanically fixed to the roof, the membrane achieves durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled/minimised in line with latest Building Regulations. Peter Faulkner from Range Roofing, who installed the singly ply membrane said: “Project architect Ica specified red single ply for the roof. We have a longstanding relationship with Protan, built on a cost-effective, quality product and great technical support. “In partnership with the developer Galliford Try we agreed Protan SE1.6mm would be appropriate for the hotel at Emirates Old Trafford, meeting the stringent quality and durability criteria required to help achieve best value.” www.protan.co.uk Documents studied in school project As part of the work to create the new £35 million Northwood School in the London borough of Hillingdon, Jacksons Fencing was specified by Lizard Landscape Design to manufacture and install a range of perimeter security applications. A key reason for specification was the easy availability of technical documents such as Q40s, ‘spec’ sheets, drawing files and product brochures. Jacksons’ Barbican Imperial, Euroguard, Featherboard and Hit and Miss style fences and gates were supplied and installed at the school to cover both the external perimeter and inner compounds. Working closely with Lizard Landscape Design, the Jacksons team was able to understand the project as much as possible from the client’s point of view, enabling them to aid in the decision making process and offer alternatives if required. Another crucial detail with this particular installation is that there are quite a number of underground electricity and water services in the area, which stopped the team from digging down and fixing the fence posts with concrete as usual. Instead, the posts were bolted down onto concrete slabs to resolve the issue while maintaining a safe and secure perimeter. www.jacksons-security.co.uk Southern Lights
