EDITOR’S CHOICE Commitment recognised Digital shower sees red JULY 2017 | BUILDING PRODUCTS 9 Pitched roof manufacturer Russell Roof Tiles has presented three dedicated employees at its Burtonon Trent site – who have a combined service of 70 years – with Long Service Awards. The deserving staff who have been awarded the accolades include David Lancaster, business development manager for the Northern region for 30 years – whose wife Rachael (pictured right) received the award on his behalf – Caroline Westwood, customer service adviser (on the left) and Paul Erskine, Works Manager (second right), who have both worked at Russells for 20 years. Completing the lineup is Andrew Hayward, Russell’s managing director Andrew commented: “It’s great to be able to recognise the team with these Long Service Awards. We launched the awards scheme in our half-centenary in 2015 and are keen to celebrate our staff’s successes and achievements.” The Russell Roof Tiles Long Service Awards are presented to employees after 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years. Andrew continued: “This year alone we have presented Long Service Awards to six employees across our two sites and we look forward to awarding many more to our committed workforce.” www.russellrooftiles.com Correcting false perceptions Effective support ... but where? Using a cantilevered support that is hidden within a slim handrail to secure the glass, Hybrid is the latest glass balustrading system from Balconette. Few, if any, upright supports are required. Standard 10mm toughened glass is used, instead of the expensive and heavy structural glass required for fully frameless balustrades. Further cost reductions come from the new system’s easy surfacemounting, with no need for recessed support channels. The Hybrid system uses a slim anodised aluminium handrail, anchored to an upright such as a wall at either end. The design provides excellent stability, while allowing much longer runs of glass with no, or few, upright posts. Cost savings are a further benefit claimed for the system, with the company stating that Hybrid will come in at about 60% less than structural systems. ‘Postless’ runs of glass up to 4m are possible in a straight line, while for a three-sided balustrade ‘square’, up to 12m without posts is possible. Curves also extend the ‘postless’ options. www.hybrid.balconette.co.uk Plastics manufacturers and suppliers are being called upon by Durapipe UK to better educate contractors and consultants, after new research reveals the building services industry is mistaken about the performance capabilities of plastic pipework products. In its latest industry insight research, Durapipe found that all of the contractors, consultants and end clients questioned had inaccurate information about the performance of plastic pipework systems, with 56% believing that they are not suitable for conveying fluids at high temperatures. While there are some plastics that should not be used for transporting hotter fluids, both c-pvc and polypropylene are suitable, with cpvc able to safely convey substances up to 95°C and polypropylene designed to withstand temperatures of up to 100°C. There were also misconceptions around the characteristics of plastic materials, with 54% of respondents citing they believed plastics have low impact resistance and more than a quarter (28%) understood plastic to be a soft and brittle material. Durapipe reassures us that ABS is in fact an extremely tough material that provides very high impact resistance and remains ductile even at temperatures as low as -40°C. durapipe.co.uk Innovation and engineering quality associated with Mira Showers has been further enhanced with the Mira Mode digital shower receiving a 2017 Red Dot Product Design award. Established in 1955, the annual Red Dot awards seek to recognise excellence in product design, communication design and design concepts, and this year’s competition received over 5,500 entries from 54 countries. A jury of some 40 independent designers, design professors and specialist journalists tested, discussed and assessed each individual product. In July, one product will be awarded an overall ‘Best of the Best’ accolade. The Mira Mode responds to a growing consumer demand for technologically advanced home appliances that are also simple and intuitive to use, while meeting the needs of a demographic that increasingly requires multi-generational bathroom installations. Apart from its good looks and ‘accessible pricing’, the Mira Mode offers users the added convenience of ‘app’ control from smart phones. www.mirashowers.co.uk
