SPECIFIERS’ GUIDE | ALPHA HEATING INNOVATION | ADVERTORIAL ProTec Plus The ProTec Plus range is Alpha Heating Innovation’s light commercial offering. The fan-assisted condensing boilers are available in four models ranging from 50kW to 115kW. This also means that when a floor-standing boiler is not an option, a cascade arrangement with multiple units is still possible using this wall-hung model. The ProTec has been designed for flexible sitting and have a series of features that enable the models to be frame mounted side-by-side or back-to-back. To make this possible, the boilers are supplied with type ‘B23’ flue configuration (open chamber and forced draught). However, should a room sealed kit be required, the configuration can also be changed to type ‘C’ with the use of a singular flue adaptor kit. Similar to the ARES Tec, buildings with varying heating and hot water demands day-to-day – or even within the same day – can also benefit from an optional Boiler Cascade Manager. A simple plug and play set-up allows a maximum of eight ProTec Plus boilers to be managed via sensors and room thermostats. Advantages of installing the Cascade Manager include sequencing of the boilers as well as weather compensation and legionella protection. The ProTec boilers offer substantial energy efficiency. At maximum load, emissions are still kept at a minimum and release less than 40mg of NOx per kWh. All this, and output capability is maintained. In fact, an output of over 500kW can still be achieved by cascading up to five boilers. The specification of Alpha’s ARES Tec and ProTec boilers at multiple Vale of Aylesbury Housing sites is a great example of how a commercial range can work within the same sector across different buildings and requirements. When Mike Humphrey at Vale of Aylesbury Housing needed to replace old, inefficient boilers, he chose Alpha’s commercial 24 BUILDING PRODUCTS | APRIL 2017 range for an energy efficient solution to the hot water and heating needs at a number of sites. Wycliffe End – Delivering an Energy Efficient Solution The Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust provides affordable housing to over 17,000 people living and working in Aylesbury and surrounding areas. The trust offers a variety of housing, such as independent living solutions for the over 60s, shared ownership schemes and Choice Based Lettings. Its Wycliffe End development now benefits from four Alpha ARES Tec boilers servicing blocks named after famous people with links to Buckinghamshire. The Anne Boleyn, Enid Blyton, Rothschild and Roald Dahl blocks each benefit from 250kW ARES Tecs, complete with plate exchanger and safety kit. The integrated Boiler Cascade Manager of the ARES Tec, and its ability to spread the load evenly between heat modules and optimising to the changing demands on the boiler, was an ideal solution to help cater for the variety of tenant needs at Wycliffe End. These independent living blocks benefit from central heating via radiators, complete with thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) and 24hr domestic hot water supply, so each living space can be controlled by to suit individual needs. The ARES Tec also helped the Wycliffe End development to give its tenants a more affordable living space. This is thanks to the boiler running on the minimum output of a single module when demand falls low enough, rather than generating energy that will go to waste. Assisted Living – An Alternative Solution The Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust had similar requirements at its Thistle, Woodlands and Landon Court developments, which benefit from 350kW, 250kW and 200kW ARES Tec boilers all complete with plate heat exchanger kits. These feed the radiators and controlled room stats, meaning each room can be adjusted accordingly. However, for its North End Court assisted living space, a large heat output was required with even more limitations on space. As such, two ProTec Plus boilers were specified. Although this range offers equally impressive outputs to the ARES Tec, due to the system being more compact, the trust needed to prioritise maximising space capacity. Therefore, opting for a light commercial offering was the ideal solution for North End Court, where Products in Practice
