Building Products April 2017

BUILDING PRODUCTS It seems a little odd that in today’s society of text messages, video calls, emails and all sorts of other electronic wizardry, that a good old-fashion letter with a signature (but no stamp) has heralded one of the most momentous events of our recent history. I am, or course, talking about the Prime Minister’s contact with European Council president Donald Tusk that has given – under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty – the official notice of this country’s wish to leave the European Union. When we all had the opportunity to vote in the referendum, it resulted in – what is referred to in the modern vernacular – a ‘gob-smacking’ moment for most of us. Somehow we thought (even many of those who were promoting Brexit) that the Remain side would win. There was this feeling of ‘better the devil you know’, yet those who were on the perhaps more risky ‘better the devil you don’t’ side won the day. So, here we are in a position where we face two years of negotiations to get the best deal possible for this country. What will we end up with at the end of that time, and beyond? We have to trust the politicians to get the best possible deal for this country. As I wandered around Ecobuild recently, I was somewhat like a stuck record with my constant questioning: “What do you expect post Brexit?” I’m not sure if it was the stiff upper lip of Brits that always look forward with optimism ... but that was exactly what I heard in the replies. Those who responded were keen to share their enthusiasm. Despite protestations from sore losers, certain politicians, and a number of others that would dearly like to reverse the decision, surely we have to accept the result of a democratic referendum ... and we can’t ask for another simply because we don’t like the result of the last one! Those politicians looking after the negotiations will have a busy time in the next two years ... and – like all those that make politics a career – will be judged on their efforts for decades to come. Personally, in terms of Brexit, I feel that we can look forward to a rosy future. However, it is down to us as individuals and collectively to ensure that our extrication from the EU is a positive experience.
