DRAINAGE, PLUMBING AND WATER SUPPLY UP TO SPEED WITH ALUMINIUM? W ith statistics showing a 155% increase in continuing professional development (CPD) course uptake for aluminium rainwater systems, Kevin Wallis, category manager - eaves, at Marley Alutec, discusses what’s behind this growth. CPDs are already vital in developing an individual’s expertise of systems, trends and legislation related to a specific sector. Employers and professional bodies see CPDs as not only important, but mandatory to their company and employees’ success. For example, Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) chartered members have annual CPD obligations. These include 35 hours of learning, 20 of which must come from mandatory RIBA Core Curriculum CPD topics, achieving at least 100 CPD learning points. There are more than 1,000 CPD seminars available in the UK – so what are the factors that influence architects and clients to consider CPD seminars on a topic such as durable aluminium eaves systems? Changes in regulation/standards Our industry is constantly changing, with innovation, new manufacturing techniques, and 50 BUILDING PRODUCTS | MARCH 2018 changes in British Standards and building regulations which impact on the approach to eaves design. An example of this would be recent changes to Approved Document H: drainage and waste disposal, which impacts on the insulative properties of roofs. Is it probably not a coincidence that, since the release of Document H, the most commonly asked question at our seminar relates to the snowloading ability of our eaves systems. Planning and design The use of rainwater systems on heritage properties, where there is a need to retain the original style of the building, has historically been the domain of cast iron. The introduction of textured polyester powder coated finishes that can allow aluminium gutters to mimic cast iron and the introduction of BS 8530, has resulted in aluminium being approved more frequently on
