Small things are always popular; from Micro Machines
(the tiny toy cars my brother collected in the ‘80s) to
micro-scooters, to micro-pigs – the public have always
lapped-up these mini marvels. But would you consider
living in a micro-home? And, could this be the answer to the
According to a recent survey by the Federation of Master
Builders, yes it could, with 31% of respondents citing the
building of more micro-homes in urban areas as a viable
remedy to the nation’s chronic lack of homes. And, it seems that
Worcester City Council would agree, having recently approved
a pioneering micro-home community on a local brownfield site
(see page 9).
Another much-championed solution to the housing crisis,
is, of course, offsite manufacturing and this month’s Building
Products looks at how factory-built bathrooms are driving
efficiency, with Richard Tonkinson from bathroom pod
manufacturer, Offsite Solutions, offering some practical advice
for specifiers ( pages 71-72).
Elsewhere, the Hadley Group’s Chris Holleron outlines the
benefits of light gauge steel in modular construction (page 67)
and Geoff Fawkes, of The McAvoy Group, looks at how offsite is
helping to increase productivity (pages 68-69).
Other highlights this month include an analysis of the
evolution of fenestration products – from dull to dynamic (see
pages 10-11); the advantages of the latest energy-saving LED
lighting for commercial and public sectors (50-51) and why the
government’s apprenticeship levy “will never deliver”, according
to Ian Anfield of Hudson Contract, who has the ‘Final Word’
this week (see page 75).
I hope you enjoy the issue and if you have any comments
or suggestions with regard to future issues of Building Products, I
would love to hear from you.
