INDUSTRY COMMENT CROSSING OVER Changes in the retail home improvement market have rippled through the whole window and door industry, with positive effects throughout. The lines of what were once clearly defined sectors are now blurring, says Paul Godwin, as aluminium enjoys something of a resurgence. There is little doubt that a good trade and professional exhibition and forum should be a barometer for the industry and subject that it represents and on that criterion alone the FIT Show dial reads ‘fair’ with further change on the air. This year’s event was representative of a significant change in the market and one that is sending ripples throughout the industry. At this year’s show an estimated 35% of exhibitors – and subjectively more when simply observing the impressive displays - were showing aluminium framed windows and doors. What was remarkable is that although there had been an increasing number of companies producing conservatory roofs, bi folding and sliding doors in aluminium over the years, for the first time in more than 30 years the window and door systems companies were exhibiting at a dedicated window and door industry show. The driver for this comes from the continued surge by homeowners to install bi-folding and 10 BUILDING PRODUCTS | OCTOBER 2017
