The Fire Service conducts a risk assessment of every property before deciding which alarms to fit, also taking into account the occupiers. Those considered most at risk, including the young and the elderly, may require extra protection so additional alarms are fitted in those properties A wide range of Aico alarms and accessories is now being offered free of charge by the Service including 10 year optical smoke alarms, CO alarms and alarm kits for the deaf and hard of hearing. The RadioLINK technology has been used. This wireless alarm interconnection technology uses RF signals, so there is no unnecessary disruption to property with fitting alarms and interconnecting them together. Another feature is AudioLINK which allows for invaluable real time data to be extracted directly from the Alarm using Aico’s AudioLINK ‘App’ which converts the data into an easy to read Alarm Status Report. www.aico.co.uk To provide additional support for SMEs in the construction sector when taking out external funding, JCB Finance is launching a new campaign. This comes after new research commissioned by the company revealed that more than a quarter of respondents who had bank loans or overdrafts did not believe they had the potential risks to personal assets explained to them when borrowing from the banks. JCB Finance has therefore pledged to help SMEs access more secure funding to finance capital equipment without unnecessary security of personal assets, and is preparing to launch a number of new services. The research also highlighted the variety of preferences when it comes to how customers would like to arrange finance facilities. More than half prefer a face to face meeting whilst a quarter would rather talk over the phone, 14% like to arrange finance at the point of purchase and 10% prefer to arrange finance by email. JCB Finance therefore offers a range of on- and off-line communication channels tailored to meet its customers’ needs. www.jcb-finance.co.uk Refurbishment work carried out on the helipad at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford has included re-painting making use of Bradite products. Working with distributor Kent Blaxill, the manufacturer specified CF22 Chlorinated Rubber paint to recoat the previously painted concrete deck. Chelmsford-based Kestrel Maintenance took on the job, beginning by high-pressure hosing the helipad surface to remove all loose and flaking paint and degreased with Bradite TD39 detergent to banish any remaining oil contamination. The chlorinated rubber option was selected because of its quick drying time in situations when speed is important so that the site can be back in use quickly. The product also deals with spillages effectively and has a low spread of flame characteristic. The helipad received two coats of CF22 and was ready to take light foot traffic after drying overnight with full curing taking effect in less than four days. www.bradite.com Changing offices to residential Project and cost management and CDM services have been provided by Bruceshaw on the Mountview Lodge project in the Swiss Cottage area of London. The 20-month onsite construction project included conversion of some 17,000sq.ft. of office space into 23 new highvalue residential apartments. Many challenges had to be overcome, including the partial occupation of the building during the works meaning Bruceshaw had to tactically plan ahead of construction. Bruceshaw collaborated with client stakeholders, consultants, planning officers and contractor to deliver a price sensitive offer in a timely fashion. A further challenge was that the building is adjacent to a Metropolitan Police community facility that had specific needs relating to ways of working and logistics. Bruceshaw had to carefully monitor the budget as it was defined by target rental values which together with specification expectation meant careful examining of design and change during the project. www.bruceshaw.com
