HAMBLESIDE DANELAW | 40TH ANNIVERSARY OCTOBER 2017 | BUILDING PRODUCTS 41 architectural designs, particularly those of domestic and commercial buildings. Products such as Dryseal, a pre-cured GRP roof waterproofing system, provide far greater versatility and reliability as well as a more consistent layer thickness than site-applied liquid materials. It avoids heat and flames on the roof and is backed by an underwritten warranty and BBA certification obtained more than 20 years ago. The system is unique; it is mechanically fixed and available in flat or profiled membrane choices, and jointed using the same material technology then finished with a UV-resistant protective surface coat. Forty years ago such a development would have been inconceivable. Reduced ‘wet’ working improves the speed and security of installation and limits any adverse effects of bad weather during installation. Being inert and non-toxic, the installed roof provides an ideal means of waterproofing for all pitches including ‘zero falls’, and on green roofs, balconies and terraces and gutter lining, and is suitable for all rainwater reclamation schemes. Hambleside Danelaw utilises a diverse range of raw materials from glass reinforced composites using fire retardant resins and pigments, to plastic used in vacuum-forming and injection moulding. The company’s products and systems are used extensively in new construction work and roofing refurbishment. Properties owned by Hull City Council, Trowbridge Housing, Trent & Dove Housing, Magenta Living and Newark & Sherwood Homes to name but a few are testament to this. Specifications have also been secured for complex passive house designs, church roof restorations and buildings owned by the National Trust. None of this type of work would have been possible using even higher performance built-up systems or coatings. The company’s GRP flat roofing system, for example, can be easily overlaid and removed without damage to the structure of the roof in heritage applications in addition to offering the appearance of patinated lead or zinc at a fraction of the installed cost of metal roofing. Providing a 30-year + design life, it offers scope to eliminate the risk of metal theft and carries ‘Secured by Design’ accreditation. As market leaders in the manufacture of GRP rooflight solutions, Hambleside Danelaw products now make a major contribution to the improvement of building energy performance and carbon footprint reduction. An ‘insulator’ core gives Zenon rooflights improved thermal performance with minimal impact on light transmission, delivering more natural, diffused daylight into the building. With clients including B&Q, Hitachi, Tesco and Rolls Royce, to name just a few, they are available ‘in-plane’ for all conventional metal and fibre cement profiles as well as ‘out-of-plane’ barrel vault rooflight solutions to meet and exceed regulatory and best practice requirements for key properties such as thermal, non-fragility and fire. Forty more years can expect to see further use of innovative materials which not only reduce environmental impact but set new standards for performance.
