be designed to reduce the levels of noise from
the bathroom. As such, Viega pre-wall frames are
acoustically de- coupled to prevent sound being
transmitted through the walls and floors. The
cisterns have also been designed to achieve a quieter
flush to minimise ‘airborne sound’.
Controls and flushing
An integral part of designing a functional, userfriendly
bathroom or washroom is the selection
of elements that people will interact with. For
WC flush mechanisms, ensuring that it does not
require excessive force to operate is an important
consideration. There are a range of options for flush
activation however quality flush plates typically
have a lower activation pressure compared with
some alternatives and, due to the larger surface area,
applying the force is easier.
Viega offers a number of flush activation systems,
from manual flushing to electronic activation. The
systems include both full and part-flush options to
prevent unnecessary water use. The flush volumes
can also be adjusted during installation to suit the

application. For example the standard 6 litres fullflush
can be increased up to 9 litres if required with
the part-flush adjustable from 3 litres to 4 litres.
The direct acting ‘rocker’ flush plates use rods to
connect directly to the flush valve within the cistern.
The alternative to this uses Bowden cables and can
be operated either by manual pressure, or driven by
a servo in the electronic and contactless flush plate
options such as the Visign for More and Visign for
Style sensitive models. These touch-free versions
sense when the user’s hand is close and triggers the
flush mechanism. This provides enhanced hygiene
for users, and the lack of buttons or moving parts
on the front of the plate means it is easy to clean –
improving the cleanliness of the space further.
With all the Bowden cable products the pressure
applied by the user is not linked to the flushing
mechanism meaning a far lower pressure is needed.
Using Bowden cables also has the added advantage
of allowing the flush plate to be mounted vertically
or even located a distance away from the frame and
cistern using wireless activation. The panel transmits
a signal to the system to control the flush and as
such the traditional placement of the control on
the wall above the toilet is no longer necessary.
This allows the plate to be placed in the position
that is most convenient for the user and provides a
greater freedom in terms of the design and layout
of the bathroom.
The aim of using a pre-wall system and
concealed cisterns is to help achieve a desired
aesthetic. This can be enhanced by the selection of
the flush plate. The current trend for bathrooms is
clean, sleek and modern designs, using materials
such as stone and glass.
Viega’s products are available in a number
of materials, including chrome, tempered glass,
stainless steel and ABS and a wide variety of
colours and finishes to complement the rest of
the bathroom fittings. For projects with specific
requirements, Viega also offers special finishes and
bespoke colour matching.
Additionally, Viega’s innovative installation frame
can be adapted to the thickness of the bathroom
tiles, allowing the Visign for More and Visign
for Style ranges to be mounted flush to the wall.
Furthermore, Viega’s ‘invisible’ flush plate enables
the tile used on the wall to be integrated into the
panel to minimise the visual impact.
It is also important to ensure that the bathroom
or washroom fittings are easy to use for everyone
including, children, the elderly and those with
disabilities. This has long been a regulatory
requirement for commercial and public buildings
where visitors range in age and ability considerably,
however the prevalence of multi-generational
households means this is increasingly an issue for
residential properties as well. While larger flush
plates with lower activation pressures will help
achieve this, the ideal solution is to select products
that feature electronic activation where the physical
link between the pressure and triggering the
mechanism is removed.
The Viega range also features height adjustable
WC and washbasin pre-wall units to allow the
fixtures to allow easy adaption to the needs of
multiple different users. The WC element uses
a gas-pressure spring to provide a smooth,
push button adjustment from 40 to 48cm. The
