washbasin uses the same mechanism to achieve
height adjustment between 70 and 90 cm.
Pre-wall systems are a low-maintenance option
for bathrooms. Both manually and electronically
activated fl ush systems have excellent reliability
and the most common cause of failure is damage
caused by user abuse. In fact, the fl ush control
is the component most likely to be replaced
or upgraded during the lifetime of the system.
However, the main challenge when specifying
concealed systems is ensuring that repairs and
routine maintenance, such as adding water
treatment tablets, can be carried out easily. Access
to the cistern and pipework behind the pre-wall
can be very restricted. In hotels, offi ces, retail and
leisure premises, speeding up maintenance and
minimising disruption is critical.
While a removable access panel can be
incorporated into the pre-wall, this can have an
impact on the design; removing and refi tting the
panel can also be time-consuming and disruptive.
Another option, often used in hotels where the
bathroom is situated between the bedroom and
the corridor, is to allow access from the other side
of the wall, but this can limit where fi xtures can be
placed and affect the design of adjacent rooms.
Flush plates can provide more straightforward
access. Viega actuating panels include features
to simplify this process, allowing the front plate
to be removed easily to give suffi cient space for
engineers to access the main system components.
The access openings on Viega pre-wall systems
exceed the standard 230mm by 100mm,
providing additional space.
Furthermore, the tablet holder available with
Viega’s Visign for Style 10 model provides a
simple and effective way to add cleaning tablets to
the system water, as an alternative to a freshener
clipped to the inside of the toilet bowl. The holder
is located directly behind the fl ush plate and the
magnetic installation frame allows easy access
without the need to touch any of the mechanical
fl ushing components.
The fl ush plate can be simply folded down and
the cleaner tablet added to the basket.
Keep it clean
Another key consideration for the specifi cation of
bathroom components is the hygiene. Pre-wall
systems with wall-hung or back-to-wall WCs and
basins are far easier to clean than conventional
bathroom sanitaryware, as there are fewer areas
for bacteria to build up. Further, in comparison
to some of the alternatives, the fl at surfaces of
fl ush plates are also easier to keep clean, with
touch-free activation providing a further way to
minimise the spread of germs and bacteria. This
makes the system as a whole attractive to groups
such as hotel owners and managers, as well as
the operators of public buildings, such as sports
stadia. It improves the hygiene of bathrooms and
busy washrooms and allows for swifter cleaning,
with minimal disruption to guests and visitors.
Refurbish, refresh and renew
An important part of any specifi cation is
considering to what extent the building can be
future-proofed. For example, in the hotel sector
guests are increasingly design-conscious and
bathrooms are a key differentiator, particularly
for high-end brands. As such there is a need to
keep the design up to date with recent trends. For
this reason hotels will typically refurbish guest
bedrooms and bathrooms every fi ve to seven years
to ensure they remain modern. Similarly, health
and leisure facilities will refresh areas such as
the washrooms to help refl ect their brand image.
As businesses will usually stay open during the
refurbishments, it is crucial work is carried out
quickly and cost-effectively to minimise the time
rooms are unoccupied, without a loss in quality.
For these applications, pre-wall systems have a
substantial advantage over traditional bathroom
systems. As long as the layout is unchanged –
which is most often the case when the fi nish is
refreshed, the fi xtures and fi ttings (including the
fl ush plate) can be replaced and the wall re-clad in
new paneling. The pipework, cistern and frames
all remain the same. Viega fl ush plates, frames and
systems are all designed and built on the same
platform and as such, avoid compatibility issues
between the existing frame and a new fl ush plate.
In addition, many of the Viega concealed
cisterns can be equipped with the Viega fl ushing
throttle, which allows retrofi t adjustment to the
fl ush to prevent splashing on rimless WCs while
keeping the volume of the water the same.
Furthermore, as systems become more reliable,
there is increasing need for spares many years after
installation. To ensure the systems can be kept
in full working order and prevent unnecessary
replacement of the frames, Viega retains a stock of
spare parts for discontinued ranges.
