Bereco windows more efficient than new timber requirements

When the UK Building Regulations changed for windows and external doors on 15th June 2022 to decrease the carbon emissions generated by new homes by at least 31%, there was an exception made for timber, whereby a limiting standard U-value of 1.6 W/m² is still valid. However, this is due to expire, with the new rules coming into force on 14th June 2023.
With the deadline for timber products fast approaching, it is likely that many timber doors and windows currently being sold by window and door manufacturers will not make the grade.
Nicola Harrison, Managing Director for Bereco, commented: “When the deadline hits, it’s very likely that a large number of companies will find themselves with products which are non-compliant, and shouldn’t be installed as they will not meet with the new limiting standard of 1.4W/m².
“It’s really important that builders and installers check that the timber products they’re purchasing fit within the new requirements, to avoid any future repercussions. The changes made affected Approved Documents Part L (conservation of fuel and power) and Part F (ventilation); windows and doors in new builds are now subject to a notional target of 1.2W/m² (previously 1.6W/m²) and a limiting standard of 1.4W/m² (previously 2.0W/m²).
Nicola continues: “With the construction and fenestration industries being so key to reducing carbon emissions, it’s vital that we all do our bit to help protect our environment, and save money on ever-increasing energy bills.
“From 2025, homes must be producing 75-80% less carbon in line with the Future Homes Standard; manufacturers shouldn’t wait for this deadline just as with the imminent Building Regulations deadline. Bereco’s standard double glazed windows are even more efficient than the stipulated new Part L requirement, with U-values meeting the notional target of 1.2W/m²K and the company’s triple glazed products reaching a U-value of 0.8W/m²K.
